Tipping—or Service Gratuity—is a complex socioeconomic transaction that bridges the gap between fixed pricing and performance-based compensation. In metrology, this involves calculating a Service Premium based on a percentage of the Base Transaction Value, often adjusted for jurisdictional norms and service complexity.

1. The Economics of the "Tip Credit"

In many jurisdictions, particularly the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) allows for a "Tip Credit." This means employers can pay less than the statutory minimum wage, provided the difference is made up by employee tips.
